S/01

Liquid-applied waterproofing

A cold-applied resin, usually reinforced with fleece, that cures into one continuous waterproof layer following the exact shape of the roof.

Typical roof types: Small to mid-sized flat roofs, balconies, dormers, gutter linings and detail areas.

  • Refurbishment over sound substrates
  • Upstands, outlets and penetrations
Main strengths
  • Fully seamless - no laps or welds
  • Bonds to the substrate
  • Excellent around complex geometry
  • No hot works on most systems
Important limitations
  • Substrate must be sound, clean and dry
  • Application is weather- and temperature-dependent
  • Coverage and thickness must be controlled carefully
S/02

Single-ply membranes

Factory-made sheet membranes rolled out and hot-air welded or bonded into a continuous waterproof covering, usually over insulation laid to falls.

Typical roof types: Extensions, apartment blocks, commercial roofs, terrace decks.

  • Fast to install over big areas
  • Consistent factory-made thickness
  • Welded seams are testable on site
  • Wide range of build-ups and fixings
Important limitations
  • Heavily detailed roofs need more hand-forming
  • Fixings and edge details must suit local wind exposure
  • Seam quality depends on workmanship and conditions
S/03

Reinforced bituminous membranes

Multi-layer bituminous sheets, torch- or self-adhesive-applied, building up a robust waterproof covering in two or more plies.

Typical roof types: Larger flat roofs, podium decks, commercial and mixed-use buildings.

  • Refurbishment of existing built-up roofs
Main strengths
  • Redundancy from multiple layers
  • Long-established, well-understood technology
  • Good puncture resistance
Important limitations
  • Heavier build-up than single-ply
  • Some systems involve hot works and require strict controls
  • More layers means longer installation on complex roofs
S/04

EPDM roofing

A synthetic rubber membrane, often installed as a single sheet across the whole roof field with bonded or mechanically fixed perimeters.

Typical roof types: Small to medium domestic flat roofs with simple shapes.

  • Straightforward extensions
Main strengths
  • Few or no field seams
  • Flexible across temperature swings
  • Low maintenance in service
Important limitations
  • Detailing relies on bonded accessories rather than welds
  • Less suited to heavily penetrated roofs
  • Surface can be vulnerable to sharp mechanical damage
S/05

Zinc and architectural metal roofing

Standing-seam and panelised metal roofing where the roof is a visible architectural element as much as a weathering layer.

Typical roof types: Architectural residential projects, dormers, canopies, feature elevations.

  • Distinctive architectural finish
  • Very durable when correctly detailed
  • Works on both pitched and low-pitch designs
Important limitations
  • Higher cost and longer lead times
  • Demands precise substrate and ventilation detailing
  • Coastal exposure requires careful material and fixing selection
